Do You Remember when Hollywood was on our side?

"During other periods of our history when America had to defend our allies or ourselves, such as World War II, Hollywood heroes such as Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, Gary Cooper, Glenn Ford, Henry Fonda and Elvis Presley, Charles Bronson, Lee Marvin among others, donned our nation’s uniform and served their country with pride.   They put their careers on hold to defend our country and our freedoms."

Art Carney - 1918-2003

11-03-03 - Hollywood lost a Veteran on Sunday with the death of Art Carney of The Honeymooners and Harry and Tonto for which he won an Oscar.

A gentleman, true talent, and patriot, he will be sorely missed.

Mr. Carney went to Normandy in July of 1944 as a replacement to the 28th Division in position around St Lô. He was part of a 30 calibre machine gun squad. On 15 August 1944 he had just taken up his position and was hit in the right leg by mortar shrapnel. After receiving field treatment, he was sent back to Britain and then the US. He once said of his military career, "Never fired a shot and maybe never wanted to. I really cost the government money."

The obituary as written by The Hartford Courant today:

Art Carney Dead At 85

The Hartford Courant

Actor Art Carney, who made his name as Jackie Gleason's "Honeymooners" sidekick Ed Norton and later won an Oscar for the movie "Harry & Tonto," died Sunday after a long illness. He was 85.

Carney was retired and lived in the small, shoreline town of Westbrook, Conn., his home since 1957. The Swan Funeral Homes announced his death in a statement this afternoon.
Carney was Gleason's most well-known set-up man, and he often had the audience for the black-and-white television classic laughing as heartily as the main comedian himself.

His characteristic garb - a T-shirt with its sleeves rolled up, a dark vest and misshapen hat with an upturned brim - was enough in itself to elicit laughs and became his personal comedy trademark.

Carney won an Emmy for an outstanding humor program and four individual achievement Emmys in connection with the show.

Carney was born in Mt. Vernon, N.Y., on Nov. 4, 1918. He was an Army veteran.

He leaves his wife and high school sweetheart, Jean Myers Carney, and two sons and a daughter. He was buried at Riverside Cemetery in Old Saybrook.
