"It's Time for Americans In Fly Over Country To Take A Stand"

By Lisa Sarrach and Kevin Fobbs

Quotes from various Showtime executives and the producers of the film:

Robert Greenblatt, Showtime entertainment president –   "We just thought it didn't make sense to prolong this and bring it on next year, I'm just tired of people making judgments on this when they haven't seen it.  Let them see it."

"They've worked diligently to craft the movie as honestly and balanced as possible,

Greenblatt acknowledged that the "live in sin, die in sin" line is toast.  We decided we'll give them that, on that point we yield to the detractors.”

"We hope people will write that we could have put in the accurate line, which was even worse."  We decided to give Reagan a break."

The scene remains; only the line is cut.  Reagan will remain silent, which, Greenblatt says, "we think is more effective and dramatic."

"I think this is as balanced and honest a movie as can be made out of this movie," Greenblatt said.  "We're never going to please the people who are on the extreme right side of the argument and there are people who are the left side of the argument who will think we didn't go far enough.”

Crag Zadan and Neil Meron, the movie's producers   They are "pleased that our final version of the movie will be presented.  We are proud to live in a country where everyone, including artists and writers, has the right of free speech."

Matt Blank, the Showtime chairman - “I think we decided that the film needed to be seen as soon as possible.”  He added, "We felt it would have been silly not to take advantage of the attention that has surrounded it."  Mr. Blank said both Showtime and the film's producers and director were "extremely happy with the way the movie has come out.  We did not edit this movie for politics," Mr. Blank said.  "We cut nothing to tone it down."

The battle lines have been drawn and now it’s time for the America in “fly over country” to take a stand.  A stand against the reality as seen through the myopic lens of the camera as they poke it out of the bubble that is the Hollywood Left.

Showtime announced the other day that they will air “The Reagans” on November 30, 2003 in one three hour installment and with a measure of hubris surprising even by Hollywood standards.  There will be no disclaimer, no editing other than the line about AIDS Reagan never uttered, “Those who live in sin, shall die in sin.”

This announcement by Showtime is actually fortuitous in that, we at Hollywood-Hero just finished reading the entire script.  We have a copy of it here, so you too will be able to see what we have been talking about and been concerned about since this entire brouhaha began.

While true that we launched a protest to CBS back on October 21st, based on reports of the script in various publications and after seeing the trailer, and were pleased when CBS recognized what we had been saying that this was political advocacy and an unfair portrayal of the Reagans.  However, now after having read the entire 216 pages, we now hold a different view on watching the movie.

Showtime does not seem inclined to listen to any critics of this film, and the quotes above rather frankly state an attitude of “bring ‘em on.”

We agree.  Bring it on.  We now call for supporters of Ronald Reagan, his presidency and his legacy to watch this debacle, tape it, and send it to friends who have the good sense not to have Showtime in the first place.

Why?  Because you are rarely going to have an opportunity to see up close and personal the agenda of the radical Left in Hollywood.  Exposed, unrepentant, and undisguised.

Normally when Hollywood is trying to make a political point, they disguise it with fictional characters and programs, (West Wing, The American President, and The Contender, to name just a few).  They claim no political agenda; they are just dedicated to good television or filmmaking, yeah, right.

But on November 30th, you are going to see what all the fuss has been about and you are going to see their distorted view of the world, the Reagans.  Just as importantly, you’ll see what they really think about us; the movie going, television watching public that pays their salaries.

If enough people across America and in the Heartland watch this film, maybe they will be angry enough to get active, get motivated, and get involved.  Because this is no longer just about entertainment, this is an attack on our values, and the beliefs we hold dear.  These people in Hollywood don’t just make political statements disguised as entertainment; they are active, motivated, and involved in the political process.

Moveon.org, an organization dedicated to unseating President Bush and protesting against the war, is backed and supported by many, many in Hollywood.  Almost all of the nine democratic candidates for president have had fundraisers in Hollywood, hosted or attended by glitterati types such as Barbra Streisand, Martin Sheen, Mary Steenburgen, et al.  Various “outside” organizations are pledging $500 million dollars in unregulated funds to defeat President Bush next year.  Much of that money is going to come from Hollywood.

While Hollywood-Hero maintains there is a minority group of celebrities in Hollywood that do not walk in lock step with this majority, few have stepped up and taken a stand.  We know that there is some fear to come out of the closet, so to speak and declare that they support President Bush or are, God forbid, a Republican, but we’re here to tell you, Hollywood Republicans, that the American people will be here for you.  We’ll support your projects, we’ll back you up, and we’ll cheer you on.

Mel Gibson has certainly found out what grassroots activism and support can mean for his project.  The Passion of Christ now has a domestic distributor thanks in large part to the outpouring of support shown by organizations like ours and others across the globe who were disgusted that a man who had made millions for the studios in Hollywood was rebuffed when he dared make a movie based on the Gospels about Jesus Christ.  Hollywood-Hero has received thousands of signatures from all over the world to our online petition drive launched this past June letting the “powers that be” know there will be plenty of people going to see this film.

This entire situation has gone way beyond the debacle that is The Reagans.  This is a rallying call for people across America who are sick and tired of viewing the world through the lens of advocacy and not just good old fashioned talent, hard work and good acting, which takes us to place where we smile, cry, or laugh; we want to be entertained, we don’t want to be preached at or indoctrinated.

We don’t want to cough up 10 bucks in a theater, or waste two hours in front of the television to be educated on the fine points of radical political liberalism by a bunch of prima donnas who have made their fortunes on the backs of the same American consumers they besmirch with their propaganda.

All that being said however, to get to that place, we are going to have to suffer through “The Reagans” as seen through the eyes of Hollywood to truly understand where the battle has been joined.

To the Hollywood Left, we have a message, we WILL be watching, we will be taking notes and taking heed of your political activism disguised as entertainment.  Overall, we will continue to pay attention to how you spend OUR hard earned money.  Money spent to denigrate the leaders of this country,

the hard work they do to keep us safe from harm and the troops overseas who are fighting to keep the fight over there and not here on our shores.

The same troops who are subjected to hearing the rants of uber Bush hater Michael Moore, in Europe as we write this, who let’s all remember got a rousing round of applause bashing the president and an Oscar at last years Academy Awards:

In Germany - "I live in a country in which it is almost a matter of national policy to keep people stupid.  I am almost embarrassed to talk about it but I feel you are owed an explanation.”  He urged Germans not to let their country become "like the US" and said Americans were waking up to the "lies" of the Republican administration.

A fan of Moore’s said he gave legitimacy to negative images of the United States and an outlet for frustration with Washington's policies.  "He reinforces all the stereotypes we have of America," said Stefan Baumann.  "We can point to him and say, see; even Americans are saying that about themselves."

In London – Moore said about the president’s trip to England which he hopes will be tarnished - "That can happen only in one way, and that's a very large physical presence in the streets of London, letting the American people know the people of Great Britain do not support this war and do not support George Bush," he says.  "It has to be done in a graphic way, in a physical way; it can't just be said.  It has to be done with the images that will be sent back to America because the American media will be there with Bush.”  (Quotes from reports on #, #, http://www.commondreams.org.)

As we have said before, Hollywood-Hero likes to remember another time in our history, when faced with a world wide threat, Hollywood was on our side.  We remember, Jimmy Stewart, Lee Marvin, Clark Gable, Charles Bronson, and many others who fought in the war; actors like John Wayne working with the Marines and the War Department to make inspirational films highlighting our military, our values and our country.

There are evil people in the world who want to do nothing but kill us because we are free.

What a shame that with very few exceptions, we have to fight another front of this war in our own backyard, not with weapons but with ugly, patronizing and un-patriotic rhetoric by a class of people whose fame they owe to us, whose infamy is all their own.
