Do You Remember when
Hollywood was on our side?

"During other periods of our history when
America had to defend our allies or ourselves, such as World War II,
Hollywood heroes such as
Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, Gary Cooper, Glenn Ford, Henry Fonda and Elvis
Presley, Charles Bronson, Lee Marvin among
others, donned our nation’s uniform and served their country with pride.
They put their careers on hold to defend our country and our freedoms."

01-26-04 - Jack
Paar, King of Late Night Talk, dead at 85.
Jack Paar, who hosted
the Tonight Show from 1957 to 1962, invented the late night talk show format
we currently enjoy after taking over the program from Steve Allen in 1957.
Mr. Allen's mark on the Tonight Show was more of a variety show format.
It wasn't until Mr. Paar took over that the late night "talk" show was born.
Another pioneer effort later emulated a bit by Johnny Carson was showcasing
new talent, virtually launching the careers of Carol Burnett, Woody Allen
and Liza Minnelli. Yet another pioneering effort was injecting
politics, current affairs and religion into the talk show format by
interviewing Billy Graham, Fidel Castro, and Richard Nixon and broadcasting
from Berlin, at the time of the wall going up, which caused quite a
brouhaha.
During World War II,
Mr. Paar entertained troops in the South Pacific, honing his monologist
skills, which would later serve him very well.
Rest in peace, Mr.
Paar, many in the entertainment world owe you a great debt and everlasting
gratitude. We will always remember your wit, self-deprecation, and
generosity.
