The difference in this real life situation with
President Bush is that he IS doing his job, but the media has
others within the Administration appearing on the surface, not to
be. What may be left is a gaping hole where Karen Hughes used to be. The
president’s right flank is missing. Where is the next Karen Hughes? Who
publicly cares enough about President
Bush, the man, to watch his back? Being president of the United States can
be one of the loneliest jobs in the world. Staffers are overworked and
underpaid. It’s a 24/7 gig. Everyone has a particular task, or area of
interest assigned to work in. It’s not an easy job for anyone who works
there, no matter the department.
However, and this is huge, where are the back
watchers? Where are the true believers that every president should have to
protect their flank? The person whose job it is to run interference with
every department, every outside influence, every organization on the
periphery of power that either wants something from the man, or wants to in
some way harm him? Maybe I’m thinking too much about Hollywood today, with
all that’s going on with the recall in California, but jeez, in the movies,
the president is surrounded with people who really like their man and spend
their day, everyday, watching his back.
President Sheppard (The American President) had A.J.
(Martin Sheen), President Bartlett (The West Wing), has Leo McGary (John
Spencer). In both incidences, the chief of staff is a long time friend and
confidant of the president and runs total interference in the West Wing.
But it
seems apparent to Hollywood-Hero,
that the president needs his A.J.
to step up or
another Karen Hughes to be hired, someone, anyone willing to get out
there and defend the president, his positions, and his integrity. In lieu
of that, the president needs to get up there himself and let it rip. This
is a perfect time for his cowboy persona to define him. President Bush is a
class act, he is loyal, and I’m sure the only reason he hasn’t gone into
cowboy mode, is his desire to be fair, and not rush to judgment against one
of his own staff, until he’s assured their has been a violation of law.
President Bush has very talented people working for
him. But someone in that Administration may have betrayed the dictate laid
down to them by the boss when he was sworn in on January 20, 2001. He does
require the utmost in decorum, respect, and legality from those working for
him. Someone may have violated those rules set forth for employment in this
Bush Administration and may have committed a crime.
We understand the president’s desire not to rush to
judgment and let the process define the scope of any violation or
illegality. However, we also contend that he could get to the bottom of it
almost as quickly, and it’s time he reminds people that HE defines who he
is, and should not continue to allow others who are not friendly to him or
his Administration, define who he is or is not.
President Bush is an honorable, humble and gifted
president. As he said a few days after 9-11, “I’m a loving guy,” when asked
how the attacks are affecting him, and then went on to say, “and I'm also
someone, however, who has a job to do and I intend to do it.”
Memo to President Bush: Go git ‘em and we, the
American people and Hollywood-Heroes
will watch your back as best we can from out here in the heartland and know
this: We’re with you!
